WIREGRASS MUSEUM OF ART RECEIVES GRANT FROM ALABAMA POWER TO SUPPORT FREE AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR TEENS
Dothan, AL – July 21, 2025 — The Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) is proud to announce a grant from Alabama Power for $5,000 to support Studio 126, a free, weekly after-school art program for teens ages 13–16. This new initiative is designed to address a critical need in the Wiregrass region for accessible, structured, and creative after-school opportunities for youth.
Launching this fall, Studio 126 will serve pre-teens and teens from across the five-county Wiregrass area, offering a free, safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment at the museum. The program’s flexible, student-led model encourages participants to explore their creative voices through self-directed projects and experimentation with materials, supported weekly by a museum educator and studio artist who will provide mentorship and guidance.
“We believe Studio 126 has the potential to fill a significant gap in after-school programming for teens, particularly those who may not otherwise have access to enriching, creative experiences due to financial or geographic barriers,” said Dana-Marie Lemmer, WMA Executive Director. “This generous support from Alabama Power helps us meet our goal of providing teens with a consistent space for creativity, connection, and personal growth.”
In addition to developing their artistic skills, participants will build confidence, problem-solving abilities, and other critical soft skills through collaboration and peer interaction. Funding from Alabama Power will directly support materials, staffing, and studio operations, which will remove financial barriers to participation, ensuring equity in access.
Studio 126 reflects WMA’s ongoing commitment to inspiring lifelong engagement with the arts and strengthening educational opportunities for youth in the Wiregrass.
