Every March, the Wiregrass Museum of Art celebrates Youth Art Month by displaying student artwork in our galleries — giving young artists the recognition their work deserves.

A Celebration for Every Student, Not Just the Most Advanced

Youth Art Month is a national celebration of art education held each March, and WMA is proud to bring it home to Dothan and the broader Wiregrass region. This is not a competition. There are no rankings, no judges, and no winners — only students whose work deserves to be seen. We open our gallery walls to young artists from across the area, creating an exhibition where every piece on display represents a student who made something worth celebrating.

 

For many students, this is the first time their artwork has been shown anywhere beyond a classroom or a kitchen counter. Seeing your work framed and hung in a museum changes how you think about what you made — and what you're capable of making next.

What Gets Submitted and How It's Displayed

Student artwork submitted for Youth Art Month is selected for display in the museum's gallery space during March. Work is shown as part of a curated group exhibition, presented with the same care and professionalism we bring to every exhibition at WMA.

 

Submissions are open to K–12 students. Past exhibitions have included drawings, paintings, mixed media, and ceramic work from students across the Wiregrass region. If your student's school participates, their teacher may coordinate the submission. Individual families are also welcome to submit directly.

How to Submit Your Student's Artwork

Submitting to Youth Art Month is straightforward. Here's what you need to know:

 

  • Who can submit: K–12 students from the Wiregrass region, submitted by a parent, guardian, or teacher
  • How to submit: Complete the Youth Art Month submission form through our online Google Form — the link is shared each year as the March deadline approaches
  • Deadline: Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis until the exhibition deadline; check our Happenings calendar or contact us directly for the current year's date
  • What to include: Student name, grade, school (if applicable), artwork title, and medium
  • Artwork drop-off: Physical artwork is brought to the museum; details on drop-off dates and packaging guidelines are included in the submission form confirmation

  • When is the Youth Art Month exhibition open?

    The exhibition runs throughout March and is open during regular museum hours. Admission is always free, so there's no cost to come see the work on display.

  • Does my child's school have to be involved for them to participate?

    No. While many submissions are coordinated through teachers and schools, families are welcome to submit directly. Check our Happenings calendar or contact us for the current year's submission form and deadline.

  • What types of artwork are accepted?

    We welcome a wide range of media, including drawings, paintings, mixed media, and ceramics. Past exhibitions have reflected the full range of what students across the Wiregrass region create in the classroom.

  • Is there a fee to submit or attend?

    There is no fee to submit artwork and no cost to visit the exhibition. Admission to WMA is free every day for every visitor.

  • How will the artwork be displayed?

    Student work is presented in our gallery space with the same care and professionalism we bring to every WMA exhibition. Each piece is treated as the real artwork it is — shown on real museum walls, alongside the work of other young artists from across the region.
