The Wiregrass Museum of Art (WMA) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) to support the third year of the Art and Design Challenge, a public art collaboration with local artists, architects, educators, and students from Dothan Technology Center (DTC).
The Art and Design Challenge immerses high school students in scenarios that mirror real-world creative careers, using visual art as a foundation for learning and community engagement. Students receive guidance from area artists and design professionals as they develop, design, refine, and construct works of art for public spaces. In partnership with Dothan Leisure Services, the completed projects will be installed in city parks and other community spaces, creating opportunities for residents to connect through public art.
The Art and Design Challenge brings together students from DTC’s Graphic Arts, Engineering, and Construction programs, and showcases a true multidisciplinary approach, where art, design, and technical expertise merge to create public art that strengthens community pride and identity. “This program gives students the chance to experience what it means to collaborate on a professional project — from teamwork and design compromises to project management and resource-building,” said Dana-Marie Lemmer, WMA Executive Director. “We are grateful for ASCA’s continued support, which allows us to expand opportunities for students to engage with the arts in ways that build skills, confidence, and pathways to future college and career goals.”
Funding from ASCA will strengthen WMA’s ability to reach new audiences, foster community development, and provide exceptional arts programming that enhances quality of life across the Wiregrass. ASCA grants are awarded through a competitive review process. This recognition affirms WMA’s commitment to artistic excellence, community service, and the advancement of arts education for students at all levels.
