Homeschool groups are encouraged to visit the Wiregrass Museum of Art!
For most of our classes and workshops, you must pre-register by filling out the “Click to Register” button located on each activity. Advanced registration is encouraged! Please note, these programs have a minimum number needed in order for us to have the program. All programs that have a “Click to Register” button require pre-registration; we do not accept registrations at the door.
Homeschool groups can also register for Tours at the museum.
Tours consist of both gallery and studio time and are geared towards K-6 grades, with flexibility built in for middle and high school students as well, to learn from exhibitions, with the guidance of Art Educators and fun, volunteer tour guides. Tours can be 1 to 1.5 hours, and the standard cost per person for tour and activity is $5. We do not accept registrations for groups smaller than 5 students.
We require the group coordinator (or a representative) to be present during the entire program and he or she receives free admission. In order to ensure that the students attending the program receive the full educational benefit, we ask that you not bring children that will not be participating in the program, especially if they are outside of the recommended age bracket.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
1. How far in advance do I need to schedule a tour?
We need two weeks notice in order to prepare the classroom and set up tour guides. When you register for a tour, we ask you to list 3 possible dates, to make sure we will be able to give your group the best experience without conflicting with any other activities we have going on at the museum.
2. It’s only my family and we don’t meet the minimum group number of 5 students, what can we do?
You can reach out to other homeschool families and we will happily schedule a group tour as long as there are minimum of 5 students. The advantage of scheduling a tour is that your children will get to interact with other children while on a tour guide led tour of the current art, and receive instruction from a museum educator with a hands-on art activity that aligns with Alabama standards.
Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your family to the museum during our normal hours of operation for a self guided tour. Visiting the museum is always free, though donations are welcome. We have a scavenger hunt with questions you and your children can use to talk about the art, and there is an in gallery sketch books activity. For self guided tours, we ask that your students stay with an adult throughout the visit.
3. Do you have lessons we can do at home?
Yes! Here is where you will find our lesson plans.
4. Do you have classes I can register my children up for?
Our upcoming classes are listed here. We make additions regular, so check back often!
4. What are your upcoming activities I can bring my children to?
There’s always something to do at the museum! You can check our calendar of events here.
We also invite you to bring your family to First Saturday Family Day, that happens the first Saturday of EVERY month, with a different hands on art activity every month between the hours of 10:30 am – 2:30 pm.
And last but not least, Homeschool students are invited to participate in Youth Art Month!
Held every March, Youth Art Month is a month-long celebration of student artists, in which WMA partners with elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the Wiregrass region to display student artwork in the museum. The exhibition is open to PK-12th grade students from public, private, and home schools in the region, and emphasizes the value of art and art education for all children and encourages the public to support quality school art programs.
