Story Quilts!

In honor of Black History month, I wanted to share a video lesson I created for our summer activity kits that features paper story quilts inspired by the work of the amazing painter, writer, speaker, activist, mixed media sculptor and performance artist, Faith Ringgold. She is primarily known for her story quilts, which use paint and fabric to tell a story. Her work is powerful and children really respond to her bold use of color. Her work is often centered around themes from the Civil Rights Movement and serves as a great jumping off point to discuss this subject with your students.

This video mixed media lesson uses construction paper and watercolors to recreate a memory from your students’ pasts. I hope that this lesson will inspire you seek out and celebrate the work of Black artists all year long!
