A Salad of Servers: Innovative Flatware from the 20th and 21st Centuries

January 18 - June 29, 2019

This exhibition will showcase the remarkable diversity of design and materials in the production of modern flatware. The servers on display will demonstrate the creativity of designers in turning functional tools into works of art. Many of the pieces are inspired by nature and others have a sculptural quality to them; their materials are diverse including stainless steel, wood, porcelain, bronze, and more!

The opening of A Salad of Servers will coincide with the release of a new book on the subject of modern flatware, Flatware That’s Not “Flat”: Design and Production of Innovative Table Cutlery, 1890-2015, authored by William P. Hood, Jr. and Phil Dreis, which explores the ways in which flatware and table cutlery designs, materials, and makers have changed over the past 125 years. It is the first publication to examine the subject in broad scope and depth.

The objects on display in this exhibition are from the collections of William P. Hood (Dothan, AL) and Phil Dreis (Big Bend, WI).

This exhibition has been made possible by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
