Folded Form – Work by Hugh Williams

Featuring recent work by Hugh Williams, this exhibition features drawings and paintings about the unique, physical movement of people he encountered in everyday settings. A departure from the abstract, color field paintings he is most known for, this work is focused on figurative compositions and the artist’s curious nature. A keen observer of his surroundings, Williams was obsessed with mark making as a way to explore movement of the clothed figure. The charcoal drawings showcase his unique process and freedom of expression, not intended to translate directly to oil paintings. The paintings are designed to explore a new dimension of the figure related to form making, where distance from the work changes one’s perspective.

Born in Centre, Alabama, Hugh Williams received his B.A.A. in Applied Art from Auburn University, and his M.A. in Art from Columbia University. He joined the Auburn University Art faculty in 1957. In 1992, Williams retired as Alumni Professor Emeritus of Art at Auburn University. He taught classes in all art disciplines. His personal work includes painting, drawing, wood block, weaving, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking and assemblage. Williams’ work is in the permanent collections of The High Museum of Art (Atlanta, GA); Columbus Museum of Art (Columbus, GA); Montgomery Museum of Fine Art (Montgomery, AL); Birmingham Museum of Art (Birmingham, AL), among others.
