In Unison – Live Performance

Jenny Fine, a WMA exhibiting artist, is back with her newest Flat Granny experience. If you saw her exhibition in 2015 title Flat Granny and Me: A Procession in My Mind then you know this is not to be missed. Fine will perform, for one night only, with Flat Granny and document the installation for an upcoming exhibition titled do it at the Mobile Museum of Art in January of 2018.

Of the performance, Fine states:

“In Unison is a narrative on living culture. Growing up in hills of Clarksville, Tennessee, clogging was a part of my grandmother’s (aka Flat Granny) cultural identity. So when my dance school in south Alabama started offering classes, she encouraged my sisters and me to take lessons. Clogging is a percussive folk dance – a true cultural assimilation born out of the collaboration of several newly integrated cultures. Clogging combines the jig brought to Appalachia by English, Irish, and German immigrants; buck dancing, introduced to the American south by slaves; and the Cherokee Indian stomp, introduced by Native Americans who escaped the Trail of Tears, hiding themselves in the hills of Appalachia.

In Unison continues my practice of storytelling as an exploration of cultural memory in the form of dance. Combining photography, costume design, and live performance, In Unison calls into question the historic form of the photograph and the body as moving image. This project relies on generative research and will continue to grow over the coming year.”
