Path of Entry

Remember the sky that you were born under, know each of the star’s stories. Remember the moon, know who she is. Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the strongest point of time. Remember sundown and the giving away to night. Remember your birth, how your mother struggled to give you form and breath. You are evidence of her life, and her mother’s, and hers. Remember your father. He is your life, also. Remember the earth whose skin you are: red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth, brown earth, we are earth. Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them, listen to them. They are alive poems. Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the origin of this universe. Remember you are all people and all people are you. Remember you are this universe and this universe is you. Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you. Path of Entry is a group exhibition featuring the work of Bethany Johnson, Chintia Kirana, Hyomin Kwon, Joe Ren, Laura Lucía Sanz Giraldo, and Karen Stentaford. “Remember,” a poem by Joy Harjo, the first Native American United States Poet Laureate, serves as inspiration and a starting point for Path of Entry, which features works dealing with the environment, the process of reflection, and remembering.

Path of Entry explores the idea of “environment”– the natural and the in-between spaces, as well as the complexity of human communication. It examines the effect of change on the built environment and the evidence of past history. It investigates the relationship between reality and representation, both what it is and what we envision it to be.

The exhibition is a visual meditation on our natural world and our human attempts to capture, understand, and translate natural phenomena. It explores environments and images that oscillate between the abstract and the concrete, the ideal and the real.

Path of Entry is curated by Chintia Kirana, in partnership with Expose Art. Kirana is a multidisciplinary artist and art activist. Throughout the span of a decade, her work has been featured in solo, group, and juried exhibitions across the United States and abroad in venues such as Whitney Museum of American Art, Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Dhaka National Museum of Art, Sienna Art Academy, Zhou B Art Center, ISE Cultural Foundation, and Czong Institute of Contemporary Art, among others.

Expose Art is an arts organization dedicated to launching artistic initiatives and collaborations in order to shape the cultural landscape of our time. Expose Art works in partnership with Expose Art House and MAP (Montgomery Arts Project) to create an all-inclusive forum for creative minds to openly share their diverse, unique views on the role of art in society by providing opportunities for creative residencies, workshops, exhibitions with local and regional partners, and more.

Youth Art Education Policy

Outside of tours, family days, and open house events, individuals who are not enrolled in a class are not allowed in WMA classrooms except by written permission of the Executive Director. Parents may not join children in the classroom during instruction times in order to ensure an atmosphere conductive to creativity. It is important to limit the number of adults to keep the focus on the kids, their learning, and to accommodate limited seating in the studio. Parents are welcome to stay in the museum during class but must remain outside of the classroom during instruction time.

Museum educators are experienced in creating positive learning environments for all ages and are required to go through a background check to ensure the safety of our students. Parents and guardians are encouraged to visit the studio at the end of class to see what their child has created. All docents and volunteers working with children are also required to go through background checks.

Refund Policy

The Wiregrass Museum of Art may cancel any class with insufficient enrollment; students will be notified and given a full refund. If a student withdraws at least 1 week before the class begins, he/she will be refunded for the full cost of the class. If a student withdraws 24 hours before the class begins, he/she will be refunded for half the cost of the class. There are no refunds after the start date of class, and membership fees are nonrefundable. Students are not enrolled until complete payment is received.

Terms and Conditions

The Wiregrass Museum of Art reserves the right to photograph and reproduce chosen works publication, publicity, and educational purposes. Participation in this exhibition shall be an agreement on the part of the artist to these conditions. The museum reserves the right to exclude works submitted without appropriate preparation (documentation, mounting hardware, suitable frame/mat, etc.), or which are damaged or incomplete. The museum is not responsible for the safekeeping of any works left in its care ninety (90) days after the close of the exhibition.

Mask Policy

WMA asks that all campers ages 5 and up wear a mask during their museum visit, including classes and camps. If you don’t have a mask, we can provide one for you. Exceptions can be made for those with documented respiratory or sensory issues. We thank you for protecting your fellow visitors and our staff!
